STORAGE TIPS

At B21 Self Storage, we’re here to help you keep your belongings well-organized, protected, and easy to access. Below are helpful storage tips, from packing fragile items to creating an inventory and arranging your space efficiently.

Before renting, measure the items you plan to store to estimate how much space you’ll need.

Pro Tip: Place items on pallets to keep everything elevated and protected from moisture.

Collect sturdy boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, foam, tape, and markers.

Pro Tip: Use new or lightly used boxes and clean plastic containers. Weak or worn boxes can collapse.

List everything you're storing so you always know what’s in your unit.

Pro Tip: Keep a copy of your inventory outside the unit for safekeeping.

Stack lighter, fragile boxes on top of heavier ones. Keep frequently used items near the front and leave space for a walkway.

Pro Tip: Label each box on all four sides.

Do not store hazardous or perishable items. Drain fuel from equipment like lawnmowers beforehand.

Pro Tip: Food and pet food are not allowed inside storage units.

Wrap mirrors, pictures, china, and delicate items carefully and store them upright when appropriate.

Pro Tip: Pack small, fragile items inside drawers, protected with linens.

Stand sofas on end when possible, and use covers to protect furniture. Secure screws and small parts in labeled bags attached to each piece.

Pro Tip: Avoid wrapping wood, leather, or fabric furniture in plastic; it can trap moisture and cause damage.

Use appliance interiors to store soft goods like linens. Place electronics toward the back of the unit.

Pro Tip: Seasonal clothing can be stored inside appliances too.

Prop mattresses upright and straight so they don’t lose shape. Keep hardware in labeled bags taped to bed frames.

Pro Tip: Clean mattresses before storing.

Wipe metal with light oil to prevent rust and corrosion.

Pro Tip: W-D 40 Specialist Corrosion Inhibitor works great for long-term storage.

Sketch a simple map of where items are placed in your unit or take a photo for quick reference.

Pro Tip: Keep the map near the entrance of your unit or saved on your phone.
